Use a Toothbrush for Your Heart
Inside your mouth there are billions of bacteria and other microscopic organisms. We are aware that, oral bacteria can create problems with your gums and teeth, such as periodontitis. But several studies, including one at Harvard, are now showing that oral bacteria can increase the chances of plaque build up in the heart, which can increase the chance of a heart attack in some people.
The toxin resembles a protein that is found in the walls of arteries, and in the bloodstream. Your body's immune systems natural response to this is to destroy these toxins. This can cause blood to clot more easily, and it could harm the vessel walls. It is possible that an inflammation in your mouth causes inflammation throughout your body, including your arteries, which puts you at a much greater risk for a heart attack or stroke.
There is still much more to learn on this topic, and much more research to be done.
One thing we do know is that good oral health is important for your body's overall health. While brushing does rid your mouth of some of the bacteria, it is very important that you see your dentist every six months for a dental cleaning, to remove even more of the bacteria.
